Muscle loss, medically termed sarcopenia, is a natural part of aging. After the age of 30, most people start to lose muscle mass at a rate of 3-5% per decade. This process accelerates as we hit our 50s and 60s. But why does this happen? The reasons are multifaceted, involving reductions in nerve cells responsible for sending signals from the brain to the muscles, a decrease in the levels of hormones such as testosterone and growth hormone, and a decline in the ability to convert protein into energy.
