Tips For Safely Walking Your Dog As An Elderly Person

It can be difficult for elderly people to walk their dogs, and it is even more dangerous if they don’t take the proper precautions. Dogs are often very excited when they see other dogs or people on a walk and may try to pull away from their owner. This blog post will discuss some tips that elderly people should follow in order to avoid injury while walking their dogs.

Don’t Wrap The Leash Around Your Fingers

Elderly people should avoid wrapping the leash around their fingers because it can cause injury. If they are holding onto the leash with both hands and an animal runs into them, then they could get pulled to the ground or dragged by their dog if he starts running away. The best option is for elderly owners to hold only one end of the leash in each hand, which will make it more difficult for a strong pull from another pet to knock them over.

Balance Exercises

Doing some balance exercises daily can help you improve your balance in the event of a slip or fall. This will make it easier to catch yourself and not land on your face if you ever do lose your footing during a walk with your dog. If you have never done any balance exercises before, start out by standing still in one place for 30 seconds at a time and work up from there. Then, try slowly walking across the room while keeping your balance and eventually progress to walking outside. There is many different balance exercises that people can do, so it is important to find the right one for you.

Wear The Right Footwear

Elderly people should wear proper footwear if they plan on walking their dogs for an extended period of time. This means that shoes with rubber soles are great, but flip flops and other flat-soled sandals do not protect your feet well enough to walk over rough terrain like grass or gravel. Also, you should avoid wearing high heels if possible because they could get stuck in the grass or cause your foot to turn a different direction. If you have a pair of running sneakers at home, those can be very comfortable if worn properly as long as the bottoms don’t have holes in them from being old.
